Beim Symposium "Japan and Germany in Global Governance: Responsibility for Peace and Security" am 4. Juni 2005 wurde versucht, als Ausgangspunkt des Forschungsprojekts "EU und die Global Governance" die Möglichkeit der deutsch-japanischen politischen Zusammenarbeit im Bereich der Sicherheitspolitik und Friedenserhaltung zu analysieren. Thematisiert wurde in der Sektion 1 "Arms Control and International Framework" die Effektivität des Multilateralismus in der nach den Terroranschlägen vom 11. September 2001 und dem Iraq-Krieg sich schnell verändernden internationalen Sicherheitskonstellation und die Rolle Japans sowie Deutschlands in der internationalen Sicherheitspolitik. In der Sektion 2 "Peace Keeping and Peace Building" wurde die gegenwärtige Situation und die Herausforderungen von Friedenspolitik und Friedenserhaltung diskutiert. Das Interesse am Thema Global Governance und Friedenserhaltung war sehr groß und eine große Besucherzahl konnte auf dem Symposium verzeichnet werden.
